Cymric Archers Club History

Club History

Cymric Archers started in October 1997, with the help of a local GNAS (now Archery GB) Archery Coach who we believe to be Mike Dunce, along with Jan Dunce, Jan Stringer, Sue Jones, Marcus, Babs, and Dawn & Nancy Evans. They loved the sport and decided that the local leisure centre did not fulfil their requirements so they decided to start a new archery club, with all the members joining G.N.A.S (now Archery GB), S.W.A.S (now WAA) and Dyfed Archery Association. They initially shot on a 25m strip of a field belonging to a farm, with just one foam boss and a borrowed backstop net.

A Sports Development Grant from Mr Mike Bell at Carmarthenshire County Council enabled the club to expand into an indoor venue, which they found at a local school.

Word started to spread, and the club started to grow bigger than the farm could accommodate. Chief Ranger Neil Perry helped Cymric Archers find a home at Pembrey Country Park, and this is where we shoot to this day. Our founders remain lifelong members of the club.

Up until Covid hit, the club ran yearly UKRS and WRS tournaments both indoors and outdoors. 2022-2023 was a period of getting back up and running and the committee hopes to move the club forwards and back into the archery community from 2024.

A few of our archers compete at national events and some of our associate members have been international competitors representing GB.

Cymric Archers continues to be committed to making Archery accessible to everyone, no matter their ambitions, and ensure that everyone has fun and can develop in the sport.
